13:00 pm – 17:00 pm
Saphea Workshop
Location: AFPG Office
The 2024 workshop focused on de-risking projects in green field areas. After having exploited the best geothermal resources in Europe, project developers are now developing solutions for cities and industries everywhere in Europe, looking at new areas with new technologies.
10 September 2024
9:00 – 18:00 pm
Full day conference + networking dinner
Location conference: Sorbonne Université - 4 place Jussieu 75005 Paris - Amphi 25
Location dinner: Novotel Paris Centre Gare Montparnasse
On this second day, participants delved into the exciting realm of geothermal district heating and cooling projects and their proven success. More than 400 geoDH plants are in operation, and 300 projects are under development.
We began with a policy session. The conference then focused on securing financing for renewable-based heat networks, which are considered riskier by investors.
The event showcased a selection of district heating geothermal projects that have achieved remarkable results, sharing valuable lessons learned and providing general guidelines to inspire and guide future developers. Furthermore, we presented thriving business models that have demonstrated exceptional effectiveness in the geothermal sector and discuss how to provide heat to industry and sell your heating to clients.

1. Le Chesnay-Rocquencourt:
The Chesnay-Rocquencourt boasts one of the newest geothermal plant constructed in the Paris area. Spearheaded by GeomY3, a collaborative venture involving ENGIE Solutions, the Yvelines departmental council, the municipality the current operator and the local District Heating Network. We are opening the doors of this under-construction plant, which is expected to supply stable and renewable heat to Yvelines, France by 2025.
During our visit, we will observe the drilling job on going and gain insight into the technology underpinning geothermal energy.
2. Vélizy-Villacoublay:
Vélizy-Villacoublay has unveiled Véligeo, a state-of-the-art geothermal power plant constructed on Europe's pioneering multi-drain borehole. This cutting-edge facility, recipient of the Ruggero Bertani European Geothermal Innovation Award 2021, harnesses water at 65°C to deliver a heat output exceeding 16 MW.
Explore Vélizy-Villacoublay's pioneering geothermal infrastructure and discover firsthand how this transformative project is reshaping the future of urban energy consumption.
